This is from some woman's magazine in 1955

I wonder how much of that is made up.

I lived in that same era and I have to say women certainly didn't follow those rules then. While women have made advances in the work place and in other area's socially two things rings true today that applied back then.

1. Women rule the house.
2. If you show up late and don't have a good excuse you may find your cloths on the front lawn.

This was true in 55 and is true today.

Well it says Housekeeping Monthly, so it's probably directed towards those type of wives that are there to serve... was probably also written by a man.

No this was written by a woman. There was a re-write done in good housekeeping in the 90s I think.

Go figure.. I was actually given a copy from someone years ago and never thought twice about confirming if it was true(not important). My wife found it last night while shredding some old paperwork we had and I thought it was funny enough to share.

Lies! It wasn't ready until 20 minutes after I got home!

She did clean up afterward, though.

Re: Good Wife's Guide : 1955 - Grunldesnapp - 08-09-2012

Reminds me of a book i found called How to be a good citizen, it was a 50s kinda book with things like "a good citizen eats red meat every day!". I bought it for the laughs.

I had an elderly patron come into our library to drop off some books they wanted to donate (they were clearing out their mothers house). They were found in the attic (some were first edition copies of books like Little Women, Little Men, etc..) Among them was the How to Be a Good Housewife Handbook, and another with a similar title but was written for the local girl scout troop during that time. It was good for a laugh.
