I actually had the exact same situation. I ordered brand new educational software assuming it would be able to run on Windows 7 64bit...I was wrong.
I simply ran it in compatibility mode and it worked like a charm. This is a built in feature in Windows 7 where it allows you to choose what compatibility level you need (such as Windows XP, NT, etc.). All it took was a right-click on the exe file and I was done.
