Originally Floyd was a real pig, that was a bet between the Iowa and Minnesota and Governor's in 1935. The story is interesting as it actually had some racial overtones from a 1934 game in which Iowa's star running back (one of the few black players in college ball back then) was abused and ignored by the ref's in Minnesota. So the following year, governor of Iowa made a comment that if the same behavior was seen, the Iowa crowd would take the field.... Tension was subsided, by the bet, which Iowa lost, so a pig named Floyd (after the Iowa Governor) was bought from Rosedale hog farm in Iowa.

The Iowa Governor personally delivered the hog on a leash into the Minnesota Governors carpeted office....

FYI FDR was in the stands for the 1935 game, and wanted the pig named "the new deal".....
