Headphones anyone?

I bought a set and I am impressed.

They are comfortable and adjustable. A retractable Microphone for when not in use. Sound is great and very affordable. They were $80 Canadian at Staples.

glad you like them, but i've found the single bar cushion/foam stuff isnt anywhere as comfortable as the suspended cloth mesh. Its also half the price of yours (but no mic...which I dont want on headphones anyhow)

I'm still using the Sennheiser PC 350 headset my wife got me. it's getting a bit worn, but I know you can get replacement pads for other Sennheiser models so maybe I can get replacements for this one too.

My headphones/mic have been recently crushed in my recent move, but I am interested if what people are using. I am really looking for something that has good sound, and will sacrifice a little bit of comfort for that. But I would really like to get myself a pair of studio quality headphones, just at a reasonable/cheap price... is that even possible? Probably need some real audiophile feedback on this one.

$50 headphones will sound great if you've only ever used $25 headphones.

wrong, they'll sound like what the specifications say they'll sound like. Look at the technical specs before you purchase.

Frequency range, impedance, decibel sensitivity, etc.
Bigger range = better
In general, higher impedance gives a more controlled sound, while lower impedance are more dynamic and punchier

A $20-50 noname brand can sound as good if not better than some of these $150+ models. Look at the stats before you stay ignorant statements about price = quality

Most headsets seem to be a pretty standard 20 Hz - 20 KHz frequency response and 32 ohm impedance. There are exceptions but it seems like a good 90% of gaming headsets are exactly that range and impedance.

I think the real question is construction quality and feature list.

Some are totally self-contained USB headsets with their own drivers (versus needing to plug into your motherboard's sound or some sound card). Some support actual surround sound by incorporating multiple speakers into the headset while others simulate surround via software and others are just plain ol' stereo.


Personally, I like the Logitech G35. I like the boom mic with the integrated mute button and mute light. I like the 3 side buttons which can be mapped to various things (but generally I use them to control music). I like that it integrates into the Logitech Gaming Software with my other Logitech stuff. I also like that they are entirely comfortable to wear for apparently unlimited amounts of time (versus my old Turtle Beach headset, which sounded great but were not comfortable).

The only problem I have with the G35 is that the construction is not overly rugged for the price you pay.

I just can't find another set that's been as comfortable as these and still has some kind of surround sound support.

wrong

you are missing the point. what "good" headphones sound like depends on what headphones you've ever heard before. if you have only ever heard crappy headphones, then any good quality low-end headphones will sound fabulous. if you've heard the difference between low-end headphones and studio 'reference' headphones, then the low-end headphones won't sound quite so fabulous any more -- they'll just sound less crappy than the really crappy headphones.

I have a 20-year-old pair of Sennheiser HD 560 headphones. when I got them, they were the best sounding headphones I had ever heard, or expected to ever hear. there are newer models out now and presumably they sound better but as long as I don't listen to any of them I'll continue to be happy with what I have already.

These are the on air headphones our reporters use at work. In fact I'm wearing a pair right now during lunch, listening to music, heh. They are awesome, and sturdy. Considering they are used 24/7/365 we don't tend to replace them that often.

I use these for gaming at home, because my kid has broken 2 headsets so far and these are cheap, comfortable, work great, and the mic is removable:
