Real Historical Fighting
#1
Since we saw some links in the general forum about older fighting techniques I thought I would post some other links that are worth watching. Especially given how many forms of entertainment don't really show real combat.

The one above shows the practical use of shields and how that impacted sword evolution.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTVC25hYJaY">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTVC25hYJaY</a><!-- m -->

Above is a video on Swiss pole arm fighting set to some Rome Total War music. This is why the Swiss made good mercs.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kShlU4gJcms">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kShlU4gJcms</a><!-- m -->

The above is actually people who know what they are doing and while not the best technitians it does pretty much show what fights end up looking like. It certainly isn't hollywood. Most sparing video's with professionals always look pretty but when the fights commence this is more what it looks like. This video is real fighting just with tempered weops. I have seen these real fights and obviously their are some people way better than others from a technique perspective the only real difference is how quickly a death blow would come.

Another really good video on heavy armor fighting with swords. This entire series is historically based. Like most non military fighting of the period most combat resembles wrestling when it comes to plate armor fights. How it was implemented in mass combat is something entirely different.

If you want a good idea how Roman's fought with discipline the above video shows a good representation. Just imagine the above video only with a Roman legion advancing while using a Gladius which was designed to stab from behind very similar shields that these guys are using.

If you want to check out some real fights with ancient weopons the WMFC is a lot of fun to watch.

Just look up WMFC. Most of these people look pretty in practice than as usual when the brawl starts it turns ugly.

Go to 8:30 to see if the fight were to the death when that would have happened.

LOL those russian videos are fucking terrible. why did you even post that shit? Its actually WORSE than a ren faire

I think this video is probably better than everything you posted. About how vikings used their sword & shield together. How integral the length of both the shield & sword were

The videos are interesting. I've obviously never fought anyone to the death with a sword, but I've always thought the way it's portrayed in movies was pretty silly. Most of the movies seem to take fencing and try to apply it to real world fighting. I never would have thought they would have used the swords that way, using them almost like a bo staff at times

If you're referring to the half-swording, it was pretty much required in order to use the sword as a piercing weapon to get thru plate armor

Because who else but crazy Russians would still be really fighting with swords.

Hollywood gets two things always wrong.

1. In real arms combat you train your entire life for fights that really only last 10 to 15 seconds before someone is wounded to dead. That would be boring entertainment.

2. Single armed combat has absolutely nothing to do with fighting while in an army. All of the indivual training is more than likely to get you killed if attached to a bigger army. Armies fight in unison, from squads all the way to legions. It is very calculated, slow and methodical. In Hollywood people run around in uncontrolled mobs which would always lead to defeat. I get it, Armies trained for years to be good at it. Getting 5,000 extra's to work as a real army isn't realistic.

You can watch the old Akira Kurosawa samurai films if you want to see real duel style combat from Japan. Those fights last like 5-15 seconds once swords are swung. Sometimes there is like 1-2 minutes of foot work before they swing and someone dies.

Those movies are the opposite of Hollywood films. They are very slow and the final fight is over in a flash.

You posted a comment, but you somehow posted it to the totally wrong thread.

In another section of the forum.

(It's still there.)
