So, I'm getting ready to head back into the classroom. I ordered some software from a brand new 2010-2011 catalog, assuming it would be able to run in an OS written at least in the last decade. Silly me. Its specs say Win 2000, NT 4.0, or earlier. It won't even run on my GFs Macbook.
Is there anyway to get it running on my school laptop? Like the title says, it runs 64 bit Win 7 Pro.

Another option is create a virtual computer within your computer and run an older OS on that.
That's what I need to do to log into my office from home cause Cisco dosn't have a 64bit client.... or we're not paying to use their 64bit client if it is an option. Either way I just created a virtual computer and run windows xp on it and can run older programs on it without any problems.

I actually had the exact same situation. I ordered brand new educational software assuming it would be able to run on Windows 7 64bit...I was wrong.
I simply ran it in compatibility mode and it worked like a charm. This is a built in feature in Windows 7 where it allows you to choose what compatibility level you need (such as Windows XP, NT, etc.). All it took was a right-click on the exe file and I was done.

it's my understanding that 64-bit Windows has a 32-bit compatibility mode, but that 32-bit mode only works for natively 32-bit applications. applications that previously worked on 32-bit systems by using the 16-bit compatibility mode on *those* systems won't work.
that is, the 16-bit compatibility mode that's available in a real 32-bit environment isn't available in a 64-bit environment running in 32-bit compatibility mode.
or something like that. my understanding of all this is a bit fuzzy.
