What classics? John Wayne movies are shit, magnificent seven is an okay adaptation, I suppose. Unforgivens the only really good 'stoic character' movie I can think off of hand, I suppose Braveheart too. Firefly and Deadwood are the only series I think of with them off hand, but its not like most of the world is looking back longingly on Spaghetti Westerns or goofy Space Opera.
I also don't think statistically shows with characters that are more than 2 dimension cardboard cutouts are 'flopping' consistantly or because of that reason. BSG certainly wasn't a flop.
Theres also a time and a place for cardboard cutouts of characters. I never expected character development out of action shows, but BSG was set up as a mix between sci-fi and drama from the very beginning.
