My entire time in the military was spent with nothing but stoic types. Having seen many horrible things in my time in the military people become less emotional during tough times not more. Emotional extremes prevent people from being able to do their jobs. This is not to say people don't break. They do. However when that happens they are no longer able to do their jobs.
If you can't keep it in check you are removed.
BSG is not realistic at all. Humans do not bevaive that way under extreme stress successfully.
