Absolutely agree, "its the federation flagship - lets give it to a bunch of cadets!"
Even if the story did have a good reason for it being filled with cadets during the event, you surely don't put them all on the flagship afterwords. Fuck, no matter how well Kirk did on that mission should he have been promoted to captain right out of school.
