I find it's usually the case that when I go back to watch an old show I used to like, I can never fathom why I liked it. Apparently I've gotten a lot picker over the last couple decades.

I probably just liked the shiny robots that went boom.

I still like that, I just expect them to look a lot cooler.

This is probably why things go boom so much less often than they used to. Instead of filming a exploding paper bag in a garbage can they have to spend $92,000 on a CGI explosion.

No but they weren't bad.

Its not even pretending to be an action show so if you aren't intersted in not so distant future drama than don't bother. But the writing/acting was fairly good and the plot thus far is somewhat interesting so I'll give the actual show a shot and see if its as good as the mini series.

I agree with Jakens assessment including the boobies.

Not an action show. It was also a good ending, meaning the movie had a ending. Grant it its opened up for the series, but I didn't walk away feeling like I had a empty bag.

I missed the last two seasons of BSG. Sadly, this sort of makes me more curious what I missed...

At some point I will break down to watch them just to see what happened. But I am expected to be disappointed based on the feedback I have heard so far. Which is a shame. It started off great.

I dont recall that but there were Boobs. There was also some girl on girl action. the rest is sorta fuzzy.

Preferably all of the above? I think it's important that audiences understand that inside every great man is a suicidal drunken crybaby trying to get out.

Yup I just watched Caprica. It is very BSG. Not a lot of action, but it has the potential to have lots. And of course just by watching the pilot/mini series you can tell that it will end very very badly in typical BSG fashion.

Also it has Cancer Man from X-Files in it for a couple of minutes. Granted I don't know if they smoke Morley brand cigs on Caprica or not.

Funny that when you wanted to cite an example of a stoic character, the first thing you thought of was an actor that died 30 years ago.

Its John Wayne, he is the archetypical stoic character. I also toyed with Kurt Russel but hes too much of a smart ass to be 'stoic' and I actually like some of his movies.

Ok, so the next question is, who's the best stoic male character?

It's a tough question because every one of them I think about seems to start out eating a big bowl of awesome, which inevitbaly turns into a bowl of soggy crying-flakes.

I will say that the character Al Swearengen in Deadwood pretty much takes the cake for me. I think the only time he broke down was while some medieval doctor probed his peter with a steel pipet to remove his kidney stones...

Al is up there, and Kidney Stones are always an excuse to shed a tear. He would get my vote because he manages to play the character as stoic but still give him more depth and believability than some cardboard cutout like most Western actors.

Dirty Harry maybe? Although I haven't seen a Dirty Harry movie since I was 10 or 11, I am sure its much worse now.

Captain Kirk? I always liked that one scene from Star Trek V, where the dude is taking everyone's pain away, sort of turning them into mindless hippies, and Kirk rejects it, saying "I don't want my pain taken away! I NEED my pain!" It was like the one good scene from that whole movie.

Did Kirk ever cry into his cereal? Even when Spock died he didn't fling himself through paint and have a crying fit. (And the only time Kirk ever tried to do "suicide by first officer" was actually a secret signal. Since Spock knew Kirk would never do such a thing, Spock realized Kirk was under duress and sent down an armed rescue party.)


I thought about John McClane (Die Hard) but stoic people aren't supposed to shout "YIPPIE KIE YAY". He enjoys it entirely too much to be considered "stoic". He's closer to "insane".

With Dirty Harry it's hard to say if he's stoic or just brazenly overconfident. Most of Clint Eastwood's characters are stoic, though. He's like John Wayne with less of a sense of humor. Particularly true of his older western movies.


As for stoic TV characters within the last 10 years or so, I dunno. Mal from Firefly? He was pretty stoic. And then they canceled that show.


I think Hollywood just hates stoic characters. Far from fears about "every character" being stoic, we have to think hard to come up with a list.

Wasn't there an episode where they all were reverted to their childhood personalities? I think Kirk cried in that one.

There will be no action.
Maybe the odd sabotage or single bullet fired kind of ordeal, as much as maybe "Days of Our Lives" or "Y&R" etc.

They have stated several times that this is not, and will not be an action show. It merely takes place in the BSG universe before the events of the show. It's actually supposed to be more of a legal drama then anything else. They wanted to try something completely different and have told all BSG viewers not to expect anything like BSG.

Of course there will be references and such, since it does take place in that universe, but that's the most we'll get of BSG out of it.
