Oh, and if you think that stoic personality types like those mentioned in this thread actually do exist, you're kidding yourselves (and if they do, they are VERY few and far between). At least BSG kept it somewhat realistic. They have a character who can hold himself together when infront of the people he leads, but this does not mean that he is emotionless or 'perfect' at all times (especially when alone or in the company of close friends).

If I wanted to watch Kirk, I'd watch Kirk (and I have and still do). But this wasn't Star Trek, it was BSG...two very different shows, so why expect the same characters?

I think I could have dealt with one break down. I probably could have dealt with two break downs. But when each episode contains a break down it gets to be a bit much.

1. Vomiting on himself in the alley after drinking too much in a strip club
2. Drinking while the human race needs him (x 8):
a. Drinking himself to the brink of passing out while in command of the human race's best ship and only chance for survival
b. Drinking himself to the point of lost judgment while in command of the last 50,000 people in the human race
3. Drinking himself to the point where he needed to splash paint on himself and fall in it
4. Drinking himself to the point of trying to convince a frakin cyclon to shoot him
5. Brushing his teeth forcefully and drooling the paste/saliva all over because he can't keep it together for a full 30 second teeth brushing session
6. Abandoning the fleet and his post because he has a crush

I think I could come up with about 10 more if I went back and watched the episodes. I finally got to the point where I started tuning out the "adama moments"

Although while mentioning that, it was one of the things that irked me, all the flashbacks in the last episode or two. By the time you have had 4 seasons you shouldn't be using the last ep to esetablish backsstory.

The last episode pretty much sucked. The high point ended when they executed Gaeta, I think.

Tony has developed a habit of getting himself and all of his friends kicked out of bars for being too drunk. You may say, "well, that should have no bearing on whether or not he can lead a battle star and be in charge of the safety of the entire human race" to which I would reply, "If Tony is left in charge of the entire human race, we're all fucked."

I do like the other half of Adama by the way, the half that's not crying every five minutes. I would have reworked my favorite exchange to play out like this though:
Adama: "What do you hear Starbuck?"

Adama: "Then grab your gun and bring in the cat"
Starbuck "What, whats this? It's a trap!"
Adama "Kill em all!"

My entire time in the military was spent with nothing but stoic types. Having seen many horrible things in my time in the military people become less emotional during tough times not more. Emotional extremes prevent people from being able to do their jobs. This is not to say people don't break. They do. However when that happens they are no longer able to do their jobs.

If you can't keep it in check you are removed.

BSG is not realistic at all. Humans do not bevaive that way under extreme stress successfully.

Going with Sci-Fi was their first mistake. They could have done a lot more on HBO. I'm sure interesting things could be done with an entire ship full of Boomers, as well.

Yeah HBO/Showtime is the only way to go. Not only is it unedited and allowing of lesbian orgies with identical centuplets but I think it makes a big difference when you dont have to write commercial breaks into the show. You can notice the lesser continuity when you watch the shows without commercials.

while this topic is just about dead, i will throw out a few things.

my father was one of what i would call those stoic men. after 15yrs on the MO Highway Patrol, he worked over 150 fatalities. he died of cancer at age 55, one month after my daughter was born (she will be 13 in Aug) and he man'ed up the whole time.

did i see him drunk? a couple times sure, but i can remember only see him tear up once when his dog died.

now, it is not a classic. most people are to young to have heard of it. the acting is subpar and Robert Urich was never more than the B list actor. but one of the characters that would fall into a stoic roll is Spencer for Hire. throw in the moralistic aspect of his character, and i found it quite entertaining. it ran 65 episodes in the mid 80's.

I loved Spenser for Hire. Yeah, stoic heros are one thing. Stoic people who you actually live with are something else.

I'm a huge Star Trek TOS fanatic. Kirk is the man, but Picard or even Sisko are more interesting characters. I think Picard is that happy medium between stoic and cry in your cereal.

I was thinking that, too.

As I recall, Picard has his breakdown moments, but they were never on the bridge of the ship or out in the hallways with a bucket of paint (well, excluding direct alien mental intervention, anyway). Picard knew when to man up. If he had to go play a sad tune on a piccolo and cry a little bit, he went off and did it in a quiet room.

You can show a character's humanity without turning them into an exploding fountain of vomit, drool, liquor and paint. In fact, someone should make a BSG spoof, like "Meet the Spartans" (which was awful, by the way) and every time Adama comes into the scene, he's flinging paint with one hand, drinking with the other and wearing a bucket around his neck which he vomits into after every drink and tears are streaming down his face the whole time as he flails wildly across the background of the shot.

I think that would be awesome.
