the nice thing about physical pushbuttons on a remote is that it's possible for the remote to use practically no power at all if no buttons are being pressed, and there's no need for a backlight. this is good for battery life. it's a remote, not a phone, and not a pda.

Yup, I'll take buttons over touch screens any day of the week for things I have to type on.. especially things like remotes which I shouldnt have to have to look at to figure out where to push.
Anyway the google os apparently will allow for various input devices so you can use whatever you want, so if you wanna be gay and turn your iphone into a remote (well android phone since I'm sure Steve wont approve of apps allowing his devices being used in tandem with unapproved and unmonitized devices), you still can.
Although if that isn't a protoype, the aesthetic design guy should be fired.

Yup, Google will have a remote that works on the iPhone, already in the works. To be fair, I actually use my iPhone/iPad to drive my AppleTV - it makes it a lot easier to search for YouTube videos or whatever. But the Apple TV remote is very nice.

Didn't have the old one, looks like this now. Beautiful piece of engineering...created from a single piece of aluminum - feels like you could drive a truck over it with no effect.

yuck. I mean, the remote itself looks nice (really nice), but I imagine that for anything but the simplest functions it pops up an overlay on the screen, obscuring whatever it was you were trying to watch. I hate overlays (especially the completely opaque overlays), because it means you can't make any change that pops it up without disturbing the viewing experience for others.

Google TV box from Logitech is $300, plus more for extra addons. I'd be tempted, but not for that much. I think it will have to drop closer to the $99 the AppleTV costs to compete. Under 100 bucks can be an impulse buy, 300 not so much.

See Microsoft is courting Adobe after years of war. And Adobe used to always be Apples little applicaion slut. But now Adobe is at war with apple and so is Microslop. A marriage made in heaven.

I disagree
Zune, Windows CE / Mobile windows 7, Xbox / internet media appliance, and Search / ad dollars.
For the most part Microsoft knows they are not going to take over Google in search ad dollars anytime soon. Even though Bing is a better technology. When you look at these area's above, you see direct compition with apple in everything except search.
And Google is a whore. They would put Google TV on Xbox in a flash as long as they got money for it. If Samsung will embed it on a TV, you can bet it can be embedded in a Xbox. Apple on the other hand is all about proprietary hardware.
I always though this was silly of Apple. If they wanted to kick Microslop where it hurts they should release thier MAC os as a Windows replacement. Its a Linux shell that on a Intel footprint. It would work. They should have done this after Vista first launched. People would have flooded to the Apple Brand.

Allowing MacOS to be put onto any computer would kinda fuck up their "it just works" sales pitch, since "it just works" because they don't have to worry about drivers and other issues for hardware incompatability since you are just allowed to use Steve Jobs approved hardware.

Maul, I disagree almost entirely. First, I don't think Bing is better. It has some nice bells and whistles, but although I use it often as not (since I haven't bothered changing the default search provider in IE), I frequently have to switch to Google because it doesn't do what I want, such as search in a date range. Plus I get often find what I'm looking for in Google when it doesn't turn up at all in Bing.
And I think MS care about search a great deal, and want to catch Google very badly. Hence the attempted Yahoo purchase a year or two back. With Apple I think it's more of a personal thing (we know Gates and Balmer were not impressed by the "I'm a Mac/I'm a PC" ads), but on the business side, I think they are more worried about Google.
And I'm not sure why you brought up the train wreck that is Zune.

Oh I agree, MS would want to catch up with Google. Just like Yahoo was Al I was the target. Im just saying they have more targeted products against Apple then they do Google. But make no mistake they view Google as a huge issue, but not so much for search as Android. MS cash cow is the OS. At some point it will be successfully attacked. HW foot prints are becoming more and more standard.
The bottom line is I think it would be a strong move for Xbox to add Google TV, just like it was a brilliant move to be the first to have Netflix. Its clear that MS has always wanted control of this internet appliance space. The problem is Media Center requires a separate PC.
We will see.
