Whedons a huge feminist and gay himself, that doesn't necessarily make everything he does aimed towards chicks, but it does permeate alot of his work including his run on X-Men.

Which was excellent, by the way. Stopped reading superhero comics 25 years ago, but picked up Astonishing X-Men on a recommendation, and it was very good indeed.
