I understand what you are saying. Just being in a region doesn't mean it sucks. We are talking generalities.
I don't think it is subjective as one might think. All you have to do is ask people who don't live in a region what they think about that regions food. Like you said you are from the south so your idea on what is or isn't bland may be the Southern idea.
You don't have to take my word for it. Just talk to others not from the South.

Better yet come spend some time with me eating!
Memphis does have good (dry rub) BBQ as does the South in general like JJ's rib shack in Atlanta. Ironically the best BBQ I have ever eaten is in Rochester NY although in general New York has bad BBQ.
