The show this year went very little like the book. In the book their are two armies that come to Winterfell.
The first is lead by Winterfell personal who come back to Winterfell after breaking the siege on Deepwood Motte. With Theon is a guy named Reek (who was actually at Winterfell when Theon took it. However since Reek was a stranger to Winterfell he gained Theon's favor). Reek claims he can bring help that will break the siege. Reek slips out. Quite a while later Reek comes through with an army that defeats the Winterfell army.
The Reek thing becomes a theme down the road.
Most of what transpired is unknown since it is seen through the eyes of Brandon who was in the tomb the whole time.
However it is surmised that Theon lets that army that broke the siege through the gates and it turns out to be the Ramsey which is the bastard of Bolton.
