The method of Renly's death and other such incidents is my biggest complaint about the books and the series in general.
It feels like at times Martin just pulls stuff out of his ass and uses fantasy to accomplish the impossible. His fantasy components are interesting enough to expand on but he really never does. It is fantasy out of the blue. He would have been better off just leaving the fantasy crap out of stories.
I am of the mind set that you either expand it or don't include it at all.
