For every book fan irritated by TV series spoilers there will be two more who buy the books because they watched the series. George has an agent and he doesn't have any intention of let George's profits lapse. What he needs to do is write faster and I'm sure HBO would provide him a staff of writers to get all of it done in a month if he agreed to it.
The advantage he has in not writing the books faster is that he is maintaining more control over the series.
