Yeah, I re-read a summary after you mentioned that. For some reason I had remembered that he got the letter and was going to round up some wildlings to help and then got ambushed - I forgot he tried to sell the watch on helping him.
He deserves getting stabbed in the books even more than in the show. Man, Starks are really bad at decision-making.
