1) Deploy vehicle
2) Drive it any distance. 2 feet, even.
3) Pick it back up.
4) Vehicle will return to its original position while also being in your pocket.
Might be we've not noticed this because typically we are driving some distance before realizing we should probably be the owner and then we pick it up and put it down. Drive home and hey, where'd this other bike come from? Then, later, pick it up again (now sending a copy to the middle of nowhere, where we last picked it up) and hey, where'd THIS bike come from in the middle of nowhere?
I guess the moral of the story is to try and avoid picking vehicles up.
I think it's meant to be a safety feature. I once had a mine collapse while my minibike was parked above. In the collapse, the minibike just vanished. I walked back to base and there was a minibike where I had picked mine up from. I think the game basically say "oh some glitch made this thing disappear, I'll just put it back" but it's applying it to intentional picking up too.
I have seen the scenario where if you crash while in transit you come back and your vehicle is back at your origin a few times in our multi-players servers (fun when you have to walk all the way back). I have not seen it where your vehicle is at both places however. But as you suggest, I'm not typically picking it up either.
Perhaps if you pick it up and catch the timing just right or there is a packet lost somewhere you get the same situation but you still have the vehicle in your inventory and it's at the origin location too.
Given most duping bugs seem to revolve around forcing the client and server to get out of sync; and given how many of these typically involve forcing the server to crash under certain conditions, this would make sense and would explain what we've seen.
I don't know that it's limited to just a crash and if there isn't some other out of sync scenario that can also happen. Again, the only way to ensure it doesn't happen, I suppose, is to not pick it up.
Too many games to fit in signature....
