I honestly dont get why a pvp fantasy mmo cant have fighting over resources similar to PotBS.
If your realm/guild controlled the iron mines, you could bleed an enemy dry of iron/steel weapons and they would have to use other weapons such as bronze, bone, wood, obsidian etc.
