Risers include Bone, Breand, Hoof, and myself. Fallers include Zeph, amins and Dustie. Vanraw is still king of the world, and Thudz is still...struggling ever so slightly.

Haven't updated the portfolios on the front page, since there's no point until Google fix the reverse stock split thing (if they ever do?). But the numbers here are adjusted for the 1-20 AIG and 1-5 FAS reverse splits.

Zeph, Hoof, Dustie and I rise up the table, Breand, Bone and amins fall, and Maul stretches his lead even more.

Anyone else wish they had gotten the biggest loan they possibly could back in March and stuck it all in the stock market? Or possibly just given it to Maul to invest for them...

thats for damn sure. I did open my first day trading account in Feb 09 to see if I could handle investing on my own, started with $2000 and my portfolio is $4500 today. And NEM is 25% of that 2k and has done nothing. I sold PIR for a 225% return, and I own C (up 110%), FAS(up 106%), and HIMX(up 97%) which have all kicked ass since I bought them. Now you just look at it and say, Man I wish i started with 100k.

Very nice! My brokerage is up around 40% from it's lows, and my IRA is up almost 100%. But I'd pulled around 90% of my money (over $100k) from the brokerage account during 2008 as the market fell, and I never put it back. Sad My wife is still spooked, and won't let me move any cash from savings to trading...

I always use the quote, "If I would a, then I could a, oh I should a"...... Its so easy to look at history and wish Smile

My wife is all spooked too. Of course we have gotten burned in the past pretty hard by the Worldcom bankruptcy, losing hundreds of thousands in in stock options, not to mention my 401k, that will never be the same.... So I understand. (Burn in hell Bernie Ebbers, Burn in hell)...

The whole market is up for no reason. It's poised for another collapse.

The S&P was at 1,426 last May. Even after this run it's still down almost 30% from that level. Now that a depression and financial armaggedon is off the table, you have to ask...is there any reason almost a third of the value of the stock market should have been wiped out?

Rather than the market being up for no reason, you have to look at it this way...the market went down way more than was ever justified. The companies I'm invested in are not earning 30% less than they did last May, and some are earning more.

Well 30% down to me actually sounds correct. You have to remember that companies were bid up to levels that did not represent reality. The Dow never should have been 14k in the first place. We are probably at a more realistic level, and I think we will have another pullback, maybe towards the end of the year. But also consider the huge amounts of inflation we are headed for so any pullback will be made worse by the dollar being worth nothing.

Agree Grieve. My take right now, is that the market is probably closer to reality then it was a year ago. But the market has long ago shed any concept of reality when it comes to value.

If there is a dreaded "W" that everyone is talking about, it will be emotionally driven and not value.

Alittle insider knowledge here...we have some major banks who are not in very good shape and unless there is some divine intervention they will collapse. The FDIC's pot is empty and needs more money. Banks that were "too big to fail" before are getting bigger everyday as they consume the smaller failing banks that are dropping at a rate of 11 per month. A long standing regulation that stated that no financial institution could hold more than 10% of all the nations deposits has been eclipsed by not 1 but 3 banks.

The next fall is coming and is going to really hurt.

Thudz, this is allot the Savings and Loan fiasco's from the 80's (was it the 80's??). Small banks that were making bad and irresponsible choices are paying the piper.

FICA is doing a good job here. In many cases they are bailing out and running the bank for a while, but also finding buyers. The main roll of the FICA is to prevent a run on the banks.

The FICA is not going to run out of money. The goverment will just print more.....

This is EXACTLY the issue. And don't think it's just small banks making bad and irresponsible choices because they ALL do it. The bigger banks can hide it longer. But in the end those choices always catch up to them. This is not an If but rather WHEN and it's going to be in the next 6-8 months.

ETA : Consolidation of banking power is NOT a good thing. The regulation that a institution shall not hold more than 10% of the nations deposits is a VERY good regulation that is now being ignored.

Did I say its only small banks? My referance was to the type of banks FICA is closing as ooposed tot he "to big to fail" bull crap.

I agree, also with the concept of printing money is a bad thing. Perhaps you didn't catch the sarcasm.

I will say again though, the FICA is doing a great job as it relates to its core role in life. How they are handling the bank closing and such is extremely professional and well done.

Crime scene cleanup can be extremely professional and well done too, doesn't make it a good thing. I'd prefer if FICA didn't have to do anything at all.

The number of banks that have failed this year are in the low 80s. 150-200 more are expected to fail before all is said and done. But 524 failed in 1989 alone, just one year of the S&L crisis. While it's not anything to cheer about, it's not going to destroy the economy.
