Hello. My name is Rick, and I play the Banjo.
It started recently. I admit that I've had an addiction to folk music. I've played Flute and Tin Whistle for nearly 25 years now. I dabbled in Concertina and even the dreaded Button Accordion. Still, I found my way back before taking that most fatal plunge. Then it hit me. After pulling away from MMO addiction, I had a LOT of spare time. Enough spare time was left in my evenings that I started to get on the nerves of my family. I needed a new hobby.
That's when it all began. I wanted to play a stringed instrument for ages. I tried Mandolin about a decade ago, but it defeated me. Guitar was something I never quite felt comfortable with. I did however love the sound of a banjo.
I blame HeeHaw. After all, it made me equate Banjo playing with hot chicks popping up in cornfields in very little clothing. Hell...talk about conditioning. So...I bought me a new Open Back. I wanted a good 5-string and wanted to play some good Old-Time on it. I like me some Bluegrass, but it's too similar to Irish Trad for me and I wanted something new. Besides, Grandpa Jones was amazing with his Clawhammer Frailing.
So...now it's 6 weeks later. I can frail a bum-ditty. I can play melodic double thumb and am starting to manage a convincing drop-thumb. I get the idea behind Hammers and Pulloffs, but don't have my timing down. I know THREE WHOLE TUNES!
I just had to get this off my chest. I can no longer live the lie. My name is Rick...and I play the Banjo.
