Ok, I have something I need to admit

Hello. My name is Rick, and I play the Banjo.

It started recently. I admit that I've had an addiction to folk music. I've played Flute and Tin Whistle for nearly 25 years now. I dabbled in Concertina and even the dreaded Button Accordion. Still, I found my way back before taking that most fatal plunge. Then it hit me. After pulling away from MMO addiction, I had a LOT of spare time. Enough spare time was left in my evenings that I started to get on the nerves of my family. I needed a new hobby.

That's when it all began. I wanted to play a stringed instrument for ages. I tried Mandolin about a decade ago, but it defeated me. Guitar was something I never quite felt comfortable with. I did however love the sound of a banjo.

I blame HeeHaw. After all, it made me equate Banjo playing with hot chicks popping up in cornfields in very little clothing. Hell...talk about conditioning. So...I bought me a new Open Back. I wanted a good 5-string and wanted to play some good Old-Time on it. I like me some Bluegrass, but it's too similar to Irish Trad for me and I wanted something new. Besides, Grandpa Jones was amazing with his Clawhammer Frailing.

So...now it's 6 weeks later. I can frail a bum-ditty. I can play melodic double thumb and am starting to manage a convincing drop-thumb. I get the idea behind Hammers and Pulloffs, but don't have my timing down. I know THREE WHOLE TUNES!

I just had to get this off my chest. I can no longer live the lie. My name is Rick...and I play the Banjo.

For shame.... Pick up a copy of Starcraft2 and give up this fantasyland thought of half-naked girls popping out of the corn field I know you are considering planting in your back yard.

I've always liked the banjo, actually. I typically dislike country and bluegrass music styles in general but I do like the actual instrument of the banjo. If I were going to learn to play something, that's high on the list.

Instrumental bluegrass covers of pop songs usually entertain me a great deal.

(Mostly I just hate "country twang", which means if it has vocals or the steel guitar, I won't like it. Instrumental with no steel guitar and I'll probably like it.)

Drums > all instruments

Good drumming will actually make crappy rap worth listening to.

Just FYI, though I'm not doing it, Blues is fucking great on a banjo. Fretless banjos and the slides are amazing.

I just saw Mumford & Sons in concert, homeboy could rock out on the Banjo in that one.. Pretty good band, actually, if you haven't seen them.. folkish but not shitty country (i.e. nashville us style) since they are Brits.

Nice to meet you Rick.

I may not be the biggest fan of folk music. But I do enjoy the sound of a banjo. Maybe its a southern thing. Though I do also enjoy bag pipes. But that must be the Scottish blood in me.

The problem with the pipes...

When played well, it's a heavenly sound. When played poorly, it sounds like somebody is raping geese.

Yeah our old neighbor kid was learning and talk about a look of hurt O.o i would give if it was bad. But he did have some days where he was spot on. Last time I heard him he was getting ready for the Highland games here locally. Thank god he has gotten better cause if not I would really feel bad for the crowd. Oh and I cant hate on him to much he brought me back some candy so I have to be nice for a day or two.
