Looks like a really fun toy, but I can't imagine people walking (or driving!) around with these full time. If they do, the ERs are going to be kept very busy...

as opposed to people walking or driving while looking down at a phone?
I don't see much extra potential for harm, just potential to look like shit... but given the fashion sense of most Americans, I am probably in the minority with that concern.

Pretty cool idea. Perhaps if Google wants people to actually start using +google, and circles, they should start to give these away for free. I'm assuming its a blue tooth device that uses your phone.
I doubt it would cause more accidents then a phone or a GPS does today. In fact probably less so, since its basically a HUD.
If this was like $50 I would get one. But if its $500, then should just end the program now.

I think they look cool.

I could see trying that. If nothing else, it might be an improvement over sticking my Droid up on my dashboard to use GPS while driving.
But I agree with Vanraw that it's going to be a price thing. I will buy neat toys for $100. I am less inclined to buy a neat toy for $600. I never got a tablet until the Kindle Fire came out with a "well, maybe I'll try it" price tag.
I'm kinda curious how it works with the need to focus. I assume the idea of a HUD is you can focus in the middle distance and see it even though it's actually an inch from your eye?
Cause I dunno about you, but I can't focus on something that's an inch from my eye anymore.

Quote:" In late February, Nick Bilton reported that "Google employees familiar with the project" confirmed the glasses would be available to the public for around $250 to $600 dollars by the end of 2012. At Wired, Steven Levy says that Project Glass "is very far from public beta," and that an end of year product launch is "extremely unlikely."

Reminds me a lot of "Super Sad True Love Story" (don't judge me!) which is a novel that basically takes a terribly cynical view of near-future America. It's set maybe 20 years in the future and everyone has things like this and they are all linked through Facebook-like apps. So you walk into a bar, look at someone and immediately see their profile and "stats" including ratings given to them by other people who saw them on their own HUDs. (They additionally measure bio-feedback, like heartrate, so some ratings are automated...) You walk into a bar and can immediately tell what your rating is relative to everyone else in the bar ("Geez, I'm coming up as a 4 and everyone else here is a 9 or 10. Let's go to that other bar...")
Coming soon!

Friend of mine posted on facebook that he found this really cool app, it was called "outside". It didnt cost anything, and didnt eat any of your bandwith or battery power. You just opened the door to your house, and it was everywhere.
We then discussed the security issues of "outside" since when you go out there, anyone can see everything that your doing, and you cant prevent it. Serious privacy issues with outside.

Yeah, no.
My arms got too short for my eyes years ago. Plus, HUD my ass. There's gonna have to be a way to either turn up the transluscence on the pop-ups, or just move them to the side so that they do not obstruct your central view. Even if you aren't crazy enough to wear something like this while you are driving, I can see this becoming the Opti-Grab for the New Millenium.

Apparently one of the Google engineers already has a prototype of a contact lens that can display pixels. I think that would make a lot more sense than the glasses (assuming you could easily turn it off...)
But by the time that's ready for prime time they'll probably already be working on jacking directly into your brain...

As a father, I thought this photo by a Google engineer using the glasses was probably the most compelling argument for it yet:
When you are a parent, there's a lot of moments you wish you had a camera ready for, but by the time you've dug out your camera (or switched to the camera app on your phone), it's too late. Or maybe you don't have any hands free, like this. Of course, you could replace "parent" with "voyeur" or "pervert" in those sentences too, which is one of the problems Google will have. Still, especially if they really can figure our a way to put this in a contact lens, I'm in.
Then again, the first batch are for Google I/O conference developers only and are $1500 a pop...

I can buy a helmet cam and wear it with me all the time for less than $100. Yes it would look dumb... but so would these glasses

http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/4/2925292...act-lenses That would be a different story... unfortunately, one pixel tested on animals doesn't exactly give me the impression we'll see this anytime soon
And still not for $1500
