Just look at the 13th photo in if you want to know what lake effect truly is. We are Buffalo though. Get your ass up, dig your car out, strap the plow on the truck and get your butt to work.

Those things that look like clouds is basically nothing but snow just sitting in a straight line dropping. Until the lake freezes this is pretty common however typically the wind thins it out. This early in the year with less wind the lake effect just sits over us for days at a time. That is when it gets serious. I may have to start using the roof door early this year.
As of right now the snow is higher than my house windows which is 8 feet high.

pffft. already had -30. (-22F) but I'd take the cold over that amount of snow.

It's anecdotes like this that make me glad my family fled Plattsburg (real upstate) long ago.

That's not far off Maull... only we close down schools and don't go to work because the THREAT of icy roads exist.

Yesterday I couldn't plow anymore snow into piles, their just wasn't anywhere to put it. My entire yard is already one big pile so I just said fuck it and stayed home. I have a 12 foot high pile of snow in my front yard that will remain one giant pile until May.
This morning I finally bulled over the piles between my house and the street. I pushed it into my neighbors yard then drove to work. Vanna drives in her truck behind me while I plow my way to work.
Its really not that hard to clear roads when the entire population has plows attached to their vehicles plus the 200 or so city tractors.

That's crazy. We got lucky as it all went south of us. We got the cold but only about 2" of snow.

Good stuff Vllad. Thanks for sharing.
I remember back in 1978 in Northern Il, we had a winter where it snowed, then broke cold temp records, rinse and repeat several times. At one point we had 3 feet of snow on the ground that was mostly all powder. We would have days where there was a blue sky, and the wind would pick up and cause white outs. Route 31 near McHenry IL would get 4 to 8 foot drifts over the highway, just from the wind.
So they brought out the off road gravel pit equipment. We are talking equipment with wheels 1.5 stories high with buckets wide enough to fit 2 cars nose to nose. They picked up all the snow on 31, in this drift area and created a mountain of snow in the middle of the farm fields.
As spring came and the mountain started to melt, something shinny and red was in the snow. It was 2 sets of taillights from stranded cars sticking out about 15 feet up in the mountain. Just a caught up in the shoveling...
Glad you and Vanna are ok. Hopefully you will be good with the melt.
