One note that my wife brought up about this clip and all the news. She took it as a major negative that people thought so poorly of this women based on first impression. Also she asked if, she was a blonde bombshell, would she get all the press she is getting now.

Not that she shouldn't, but that its a sad reflection on society and how we judge people.

I think that's the main point most reasonable people are thinking themselves.

She's only gained this popularity and attention because she isn't the typical "bombshell" that people associate with being a requirement for being a good (after all, we all know that having clean youthful skin, nice eyes and a slim figure is clearly what gives great singers their great voices and abilities...*sigh*).

Aren't all "ugly" people supposed to be hidden away doing scientific experiemtns or something anyways? We all know that ugliness creates intelligence, right? So she's probably planning world domination as we speak and this is probably just phase one of her ultimate plan.

Annnnnnd in the end, this is why I believe and hope this world gets closer everyday to total annihilation. As a species overall, I'm surprised we made it this far and personally don't think we deserved to.

*shrug*
That's my rant.

May I say, if you really feel this way can you do us all a favour? Find the nearest cliff and help us combat overpopulation by 1.

I think it's a case of "silent majority". It's the young and the beautiful who always get put on a pedestal, which leaves the silent majority (who are neither young nor beautiful) with their wistful dreams of one day being on a pedestal themselves, despite their flaws.

So when someone who is neither young nor beautiful actually makes it to the pedestal, it's an instant win with the populace. Everyone loves an underdog because so many people ARE underdogs.

There's probably some statement here about the disconnect between Hollywood and normal human beings (again!). Hollywood puts pretty people on the screen, but it's not until a normal person makes it big that people go wild. If Susan Boyle could sing like that and be 20, blond and with perky tits, she'd be popular, sure, but she wouldn't get the YouTube popularity she's getting now.

This tells me that the population is, in fact, still sane and good. We like seeing people win who don't fit the mold, because it makes us think it could someday be us.

It's modern Hollywood (which is to say, the modern model of television production in general) that's doomed. Their emotional disconnect from the world is nearly complete. They have no idea what normal people like or want.

well, i will give you another piece of disappointing news. the geeks do not inherit the world.

unless you are Bill Gates, on average the people popular in High School still end up doing better than the people with the best grades who were not as popular. The reason quoted was social networking and social skills that got them better jobs and higher pay.

As to Susan Boyle, all you have to do is look at some of the pathetic losers that were scratched off Britain's Got Talent in the first 30 seconds and they all seem to have many of the traits that she had. Age, cheekyness, style, dress, ect. Take a look at the 60yr old male dancer that stood there waving his arms like an Orangatan; it is on youtube.

A betting man would have bet against her, and given odds against a stellar performance. But that is why they call it betting instead of winning.

Imho, the reason she is so popular is that aside from the underdog arguement, people genuinely like to be pleasantly surprised. Simon goes from rolling his eyes to impressed, the blonde is astonished and the other guy is amazed - that is a world wide pleasant surprise.

I was surprised how well she performed after seeing how nervous and flaky she seemed during the questioning. Looks had nothing to do with it, if you have ever watched an opera you know ugly people can sing too!
