POTBS still has some really great moments.

So lately we've been doing "Red Zone Patrol" -- running around in fast ships, mostly in 1's, 2's and 3's and killing people that way. By being fast, we stop the gankers from catching us and can pick our battles better.

But when I say "fast ships", I mean ships that can still kill stuff. Mercy, Tigre Sleek, Mordaunt Sleek, etc -- tough ships with lots of guns which also happen to be fairly fast.

The Spanish really hate us for this and call us "fail boaters" and have taken to trying to one-up us by taking REALLY fast/nimble ships, like the Expedition Packet Boat or Corsair -- ships that can be even faster than ours, particularly on the open sea, but which have very little firepower. They love to try and gank us so they can say "oh, don't like failboating so much now, do ya?" (They would like us to stop using fast ships and return to using slow, expensive ships like they use...)

They think they're showing us up, but they're actually being pretty dumb about it.

So a Corsair cut me off downwind and got me into a battle. A Herc Sleek joined him. I called for help and had a British Herc Sleek join me. Then 3 more Spanish jumped in, so we decided to run.

We ended up running in different directions around this large island. A Herc Sleek and a Corsair chased me. The other Brit had a Macedon, Expedition and some other small ship chasing him. I noticed that the Expedition tried to cut him off and nearly got blown to splinters, making it away to hide behind the Macedon with a sliver of hull left.

Seeing this, I decided it was embarrassing to be seen running from 2 ships while the other guy was apparently fighting his way to the exit point with 3 ships. So I decided to rageboard the Herc Sleek that was chasing me and was right on my tail.

30 seconds later, I was on the deck of the Herc Sleek.

The other ships, seeing this, apparently gave up on the other Brit, allowing him to escape, and came to try and sink me while I was in boarding combat. Problem is they were 2000+ yards away and the only ship that could attack me was the shitty little Corsair. I was betting he couldn't sink me faster than I could beat the Herc Sleek in boarding combat.

And I was right.

I finish off the Herc Sleek, get out with about 800 structure left, I blow half the masts off of the Corsair and run. The other ships are closing but are still too far away to help. I make my getaway before they get in range, outrunning the damaged Corsair.

Net result:
5 Spanish try to gank 2 Brits and lose a Herc Sleek and don't sink anyone.

That's the difference between "a good plan" and "a spiteful, but shitty plan".

As my mind wandered on my commute home last night, I remembered a wonderful old moment from the VZ days... I was leveling up my cleric, Xsiggles after it was discovered that healers were kind of nice to have... in the early days of iggles, we were just a tad melee heavy. Hell, with all the trolls, we were just plain heavy. I digress.

I was grinding in Guk with a group of iggle shadowknights (perhaps one warrior); they were in their upper 30's, maybe a 40, I was lowest level at somewhere around 34- after a bout of frog slaying, I was spending some quality time downing fast food while staring at my spellbook (meditation, yay!). I think at least half of the others were fishing while they waited. Anywho, my med break was interrupted rather rudely by a passing high-level (near cap I think) Pekadin who came rapidly around a corner and jumped us before we could really react. Thinking to himself, "ahh, lowbies!" He started into me with a rather painful crit, removing my wonderous spellbook from sight... Before I could even stop drinking soda, he recieved a triple harmtouch. It either completely dropped him, or brought him so low that he died within moments - I had dr. pepper coming out of my nose.

This was SOE's greatest venture into the realm of PvP. Pre-Luclin , SZ was the best PvP game ever. All the Woes of RZ/TZ and VZ were supposedly fixed on SZ

Bind camping-legal, you could bind camp to your heart's delight

Corpse camping-legal, see above

zoneline/portal camping-legal , see above

Causing EXP death in PvP IE letting a mob get the kill or a pet. This was fixed on SZ by having every death, pvp/pve have the same penalty.

Training-where as in the previous zeks, SZ had no rules (at first) about training. it became a legitimate tactic to use in pvp and groups/guilds had to adapt or die.

immortal healing/buffing-fixed, could not heal or buff enemy team members.

xteaming-fixed, could not group or guild with enemy team members.

just about every woe that was complained about for years on the zeks was fixed on sz, upon its release war was on.

I didnt get to start on SZ till about 40 days after its release. I had been in contact with dave IE renxerox who informed me that vlad probably wouldnt invite me into iggles if he knew who i was. No problem, i asked him what classes they really needed and was told Cleric was number 1.

I rolled up Gathrintain the DE cleric and started to level up, i had joined some newbie guild and didnt apply to iggles till somewhere in my 20s or early 30s. Actually it was past 34 now that i think of it, because i recall being in Lguk(lower guk) healing a frenzy group with just Sheals(superior heals) and not being in iggles.

Luclin still had not been released when i joined Iggles on SZ and was curious why so many core members were already MIA. This was pvp at its finest, with all the fixes, no GM intervention, what everyone had wanted for years and yet all the MIA's

onto the wars, the dark coalition (neutral) were pretty much owning the server. the highest evil guild at the time was (ruin) who eventually managed to level/gear up and give them a fight. DAOC was released and most of TDC left SZ for it, since Ruin at this time was dominating the server. Tenaj and his guild were already pulling down Velious super mobs such as tormax, velk, yelinak, and getting the phat lewts from NTOV.

Renxerox (the only person in iggles i had ever known IRL-i had introduced him to VZ iggles back when i was playing Deneeria, we both worked at the same health insurance company and got to talking about EQ, he was a 25 war on some blue server and i convinced him to try pvp and helped Plevel him up some on my mage.)

Time and time again we were getting owned by team newt. basically the same problem on VZ with people not wanting to level/gear up yet trying to compete with those that were. Level 60 was the cap and it just took 2 to 3 of them to wipe out 2+ groups of 48-54's no matter how organized.

We had a joint raid with (hate) the number 2 evil guild on SZ in the plane of Hate and it was a fiasco. By this time several newts were using faction to their advantage, gaining chardok faction and being able to singlehandedly wipe any group/raid attempted there, and make CR(corpse retrieval) a living nightmare.

time progressed and soon i became the only active/high level cleric in the guild. what raids can you do with only 1 cleric? Iggles were not to be counted out though. Renxerox made me an officer and we attempted an all iggle raid to PoF(plane of fear) we wiped hard on entry and i went from lev 56 to 51 before we got fully CRed some 10 hours later. I had bound at the SW "safe spot" and was bind camped by mobs. trying to break in again with naked guildies was not an option so i came up with a plan that was gonna hurt me in the exp bar. I slowly moved my bind spot from the SW corner to the North safe camp. this took hours as most of the time i couldnt get the bind spell memmed or live long enough for it to refresh to cast it. but slowly and surely i was making progress and several hours later i had made it to the north wall and was bound there. The CR began as an SK started dragging corpses to me, once we had about 6 of us up, we started clearing to the SW wall mainly dark/fearkite with only a couple set backs. over half of my 100+ corpses had rotted and the remaining ones i only got back to lev 51 when we finally left. over all a hell of a night hehe. Many thought we as a guild were done, true i wasnt about to step foot into PoF anytime soon but i hadnt counted it out entirely. We focused on plane of hate and had a few successful nights there.
Eventually we went back to PoF and had a successful raid of everything but CT(cazic thule) because he had been buffed up well beyond the CT of olden days) we had a mage with COTH (call of the hero) she would COTH me to remove aggro after i CHealed(complete healed) the MT(main tank) 5 or 6 groups but only 1 cleric so we survived on shammy power

Somewhere during this time Luclin came out and created "safe zones" where you could not PVP, the nexus and the bizarre. new AA (alternate ablities) came out and manaburn (wizzy) deathtouch(shadowknight) were the most powerful. many a wizard and SK would go PvPing, use their ability then sit in a safe zone till it refreshed some 2 hours later, rinse and repeat. it took a long time before SOE nerfed those abilities, each was sure kill, i alone was mana burned so many times i couldnt keep count.

Meanwhile Iggles were at the most powerful, we had well over 50 members (at least 12 or more at lev 60) who could go into the old world planes and we ventured to kill Innoruuk. Our first kill of a true tier mob. however strife was in the guild. the lower level members, some of which had no plans of ever leveling up past 30-40ish and those of us who saw the need to stay competive, gain gear, gain AAs or once again we would have to just run or die when a few better geared/better AAed enemy players attacked.

Team good was all but dead, team newt had combined its remaining forces into a guild called (tides of wrath) and were formidible to all but Ruin. Ruin for somereason broke up and most of their core left the server, the remainder joined the guild hate or the other top guild Vindictive (which was a consolidation of a few smaller guilds) and for awhile the odds were pretty even team evil vs team newt, especially when Hate and Vindictive had a guild war ( dont recall the reason it got started but it was messy) there was a bug though that was exploited by both sides, if an evil player went LD, the opposed guildwar member could no longer hit them so if one was losing they would simply /exit and not get killed. wasnt long before bothsides started making deals with newts to kill players who did that.

The big exodus begain, nearly every level 60, at the time more then 18 closer to 20+ decided to leave the guild, some joined Vindictive, some joined Hate, others formed with lev 60s from other minor evil guilds to create (SiN) strength in numbers while still ohters including my self, just stayed unguilded.

I was invited to join Hate but could not because several ex iggles were in vindictive and i couldnt bring myself to guildwar with them. we had been through alot, endless pvp, exp groups, getting trained out of sebilis owned by factioned newts etc. it was a great group of people, the upper
evil got ahead again and stayed there, PoP (planes of power) came out and team evil was able to CB (cock block) team newt out of the better zones so they couldnt progress into the elemental planes much less into the plane of time.

Vindictive dies and its remnants join Hate, Sin also dies and likewise join hate. Now there are alot of ex iggles in hate:
just to name a few:

strago-monk (THE monk, think he became the best geared monk on server eventually and notorious PKer
saurath-Wizard, saurath was selfless and dependable, and a very good PKer
Hatre(renxerox)-rogue
Bigallover-sk
Griftrix-sk
Geko-shammy
Turns-beast lord
Huxley-sk
Bovinity-sk
Issaim-sk
Fraustbyte-shammy
Ezykial-sk
Otaduke-shammy
Towenaar-our only enchanter on many a raid
Tryal- silly necro, but once he got his stuff together, he was formidble

many others but i cant recall them all. these guys were awesome and i thoroughly enjoyed being guilded with them. I think they all would of said the same of me. Deneeria was but one aspect of my RP, those that recall, Nishu was a very different character and played very differently. Gathrintain yet a third and again unless you knew you would of never linked the two together, of all my time on SOE servers id have to say the SZ portion was the most fun, most adrenaline based, as well as the most frustrating

Long live Sullon Zek!!

Back in the days of UO, I had a character named "Ted Kaczynski" -- the unibomber.

One of the great thing about UO was all the stuff you could do with the crafting system. I was a lumberjack so I could chop down trees. I was a carpenter so I could turn wood into boxes. I was an alchemist so I could make potions and I was a tinkerer so I could use those potions to make traps in the boxes.

In UO, it was entirely possible to accidentally drop something on the ground, or worse, die and drop EVERYTHING on the ground. If you accidentally dropped your wallet on the ground in UO, there was a 99% chance someone would snatch it up and run away cackling with their free loot.

I took advantage of this.

I would go into town and drop a box. Oops! Clumsy me! You'd think that once in a while someone would helpfully snatch it up and then hand it back and say, "Hey pal, you dropped this." That never happened.

Instead, they took the box and opened it to see what prizes they had won. When the unibomber drops a box, the only prize inside is your imminent explosive death.

Once people started realizing that if I dropped a box, it was best to not open it, I decided to turn to other methods. I would drop a box in a store and then use the "hide" skill to hide in the corner. Someone would wander in, see a box on the floor and nobody else in the room, pick it up and blamo! I would sometimes go outside of town and leave a chest in the middle of the road, but half the time the person would just pick it up and keep walking, presumably opening it and exploding somewhere else later on. Next, I started trapping chests in the dungeons, which couldn't be picked up or moved. With the "hide" skill, I could stand hidden beside a chest and trap it.

Sometimes people would search the chest for traps and disarm it. Since I was hidden right there, I would trap it again. They would open the box and blamo! And then I'd take all their stuff.

There was one guy (whose name I don't recall) that did this once and survived with a sliver of health. He was quite cordial about it. From then on, he'd always come up to the chests and say, "Hi Ted, how's business?" Business was usually good.

My crowning achievement, however, was probably the time I got jumped by 3 PKs that were killing everyone in the dungeon. They caught me and killed me and were sorting through my loot. I kept all of my loot in trapped, locked boxes. The keys were in my inventory as well but they were just all grabbing stuff randomly and not paying any attention. If you opened the box with the key, you disarmed the trap temporarily. If you opened it any other way, you didn't.

I think the unlock spell in UO was "Ex Por". So I'd see one of them say, "Ex Por", hear a click. Then a pause. Then a boom. Then they died and joined me standing there as a ghost.

The other two PKs paused. Huh. Oh well! "Ex Por". Click. Boom. Dead. We are now three ghosts.

Sadly, the last PK wised up and resurrected his pals before opening any more boxes. They finally realized what my name was and basically said, "Oh shit! It's the unibomber!"

In the end, the developers made some changes that made this sort of thing impossible, but it was good while it lasted.

Pirates of the Burning Sea...

I saw Turpitude was getting close to 5k unrest, so I drove up there in my Deliverance Heavy. This had multiple purposes:

1) I could try and jump someone when unrest reached 5k
2) I could get sunk and finally free up a slot. I've been wanting a second Oliphant.
3) I could pick up nails from Thudz and ship them back to the Antilles if I don't get sunk.

When I got there, I saw 2 Brits in seperate fights: a level 50 and a level 40. I parked outside on a current marker and waited for the zone to go red.

Bing, zone goes red. Level 50 gets out of his battle so I go running in.

Looking...looking...looking... don't see him anywhere.

Bing, there he is. I go for him and 2 seconds before I click on him I see the level 40 get out of his battle.

Fight starts and it's 2v1. The level 40 is in a Myrmidon and the level 50 is in a Mordaunt 4th rate!

I turn and begin my plan of "Snare the big ship and fight the little ship". I'm trying to keep the Mordaunt as far away as possible while turning to broadside the Myrmidon. I keep bar in my rear cannons especially for the Mordaunt and heavy shot in my broadsides for the Myrmidon.

They're going after my sails, but not very effectively. Between Defense 2, Cut Lines (which adds defense, these days), St. Elmo's Masts and the ranges we were at, they just weren't putting any damage on my sails that I couldn't repair. I think the Myrmidon in particular was making the critical mistake of using Star Shot from a bit too far away, because as close as he was he was still whiffing majorly. Meanwhile, I'm blasting the shit out of him with cannon balls.

The Myrmidon is forced to run for it and barely escapes. I thought I could probably finish him off but I was afraid of catching too much flak from the Mordaunt so I let the Myrmidon go and prepared to 1v1 the Mordaunt.

I figured I'd shoot his sails up a bit and then turn and charge him and go for the board. Little did I realize, as focused as I was on what was going on behind me, that I was about to impact the shoreline. Worse, I had driven into a tiny little bay area.

So I turned on the Mordaunt a little earlier than planned. He was still going after my sails but seemed to throw some anti-personnel shot into the mix. I got a Plague Ship on him and was able to pull alongside, Decimate and climb on board.

The boarding combat was decidedly one-sided. I didn't die once. Just plowed through him and his crew.

I got out of boarding combat to find the Myrmidon parked on my nose, blasting off my masts. I captured the Mordaunt and used it to blow the Myrmidon out of the water. The Myrmidon was determined to board me, which wasn't a bad idea at first, but he failed the first attempt and never got another and spent way too much time firing grapeshot at me.

So now I have a Mordaunt and two British learned a valuable lesson about flipping pirate ports, like maybe, "You might want to practice a little PvP in less valuable ships first."

Just plowed through him and his crew.

...the day Equinotix and that alliance raiding guild (their name eludes me now) did that quest in moonglade to open AQ and The Purge brought down the thunder on those guys and the server crashed 3 times before the quest was completed? That was definetly my favorite memory of my year and a half of WoW

"Target the Healers!!!"

Good stuff, the only reason i would ever play WoW again would be for the awsome experience with The Purge, you guys are great, keep kicking Alliance butt!

so I'm running around Mulgore with my new level 12 hunter, looking for a quest mob that I need to kill, and I stumble across a rare mob, "The Rake".

what do I do? what I always do when I see a rare spawn -- I attack it immediately before someone else can tap it and grab its loot. I sic my pet on it, lay Hunter's Mark down on it and start blasting. A few moments before it dies it occurs to me that maybe it would make a better pet than the run-of-the-mill wolf I currently have, the type of wolf that wanders every nook and cranny of Mulgore.

it died.

I looked up The Rake on thottbot; apparently it's considered a must-have pet -- alliance players come over to Mulgore to get it. I spent the next hour or so running around Mulgore waiting for the respawn. Fortunately, thottbot also says that The Rake is just about the commonest rare mob in the game...

I now have my first "real" pet, and hopefully the knowledge to think twice before killing rare mobs from now on...
